Smart Solutions To Reducing Your Electricity Costs

Smart solutions that are making it easier for any Aussie householder, to get on the path of home energy reduction.

Ask yourself what could you be saving off your power costs?

Well we would say, far more than you are currently!

Why? Well you only have two sources of information available to you right now, in regards to electricity use and costs.

  • An electricity bill every three months
  • An electricity meter in the power box

MISSING is the needed realtime feedback, for instant notification of any event!

Now there is not much you can do about a huge electricity bill arriving three months after the event!! You may have a great memory, but what was that event? That event that cost you so dearly!

You can only guess as it could have been :

  • An increase in usage due to householder activity?
  • An unknown faulty appliance?
  • An electricity billing issue?
  • Misconceptions of actual appliance power ratings?
  • A degrading of solar power output?
  • A solar power outage?
  • An electricity metering issue?

There are many reasons for unknown costly high power events, in many Aussie homes. Remember you are not alone here, with having to wonder why your electricity costs have risen!

Others are also finding it all to hard to discover the real reason, after the event! So make it easier on yourself and get the information you need.

List Of Australian Electricity Tariffs Freedom Of Choice

Did you know if your electricity tariff type does not match your home's power usage pattern, you could dramatically be paying far more for your power?

We often come across Aussie householders whom could be saving far more off electricity costs, by simply changing electricity tariff type.

For example a Time Of Use [TOU] electricity tariff, is not necessarily the best tariff for you when you are a young family or an older couple. Simply because you may use high cost power [peak] and not be in a position to use more of the cheap power [off-peak], to offset the high cost of the peak. Thus you pay more!

Commonly the reason for this can be due to lifestyle restrictions. Affecting when the power is used based on the time of day. You know you have to feed young children or you may go to sleep quite early at night!

In these cases, the home could be better off on a flat or block / tiered electricity tariff. Now there are a few ways to check if your electricity tariff type is supplying you with the cheapest electricity costs, such as:

What you need to understand first of all, is most electronic meters in Australia support ALL available electricity tariffs. If you have been forced onto a TOU tariff [commonly when solar power has been installed], then you need to discuss your options again, with your existing electricity retailer or switch. Not all electricity retailers have all the options!

Your freedom of choice Australian electricity tariffs are:

  • Flat Rate : Charged the same for all your peak power [ie 24 cents] Commonly this is used alongside a controlled load tariff
  • Increasing Block Rate [IBR] : Charged less for the first block / units of power kWh [ie 24 cents for 0 to 1000 kWh] then charged more for the next block [ie 27 cents 1001 to 2000 kWh]
  • Decreasing Block Rate [DBR] : Charged more for the first block / units of power kWh [ie 27 cents for 0 to 1000 kWh] then charged less for the next block [ie 24 cents 1001 to 2000 kWh]
  • Time Of Use [TOU] : Charged at different rates based on the time of day. [ie off-peak 22:000 to 07:00 18 cents / peak 14:00 to 20:00 48 cents / shoulder 07:00 to 14:00 & 20:00 to 22.00 34 cents / Weekends different]
  • Controlled Loads : Available on all of the above tariff types. Used for the connection of hot water and other devices, such as pool pumps or large storage heaters. This controlled load rate being similar in cost to the off-peak price for a TOU.

1st Step : Understand fully what electricity tariff type your home is connected to.

2nd Step : Select a way to work out if the existing electricity tariff, truly is the best option for lowering electricity costs for your home.

If you are short of time and experience, then working this out with a calculator and taking meter readings is not for you.

3rd Step : You may wish to install a simple ENERGY MONITOR WITH TARIFF COMPARISON software, to supply you with the answer on auto-pilot.

Or pass the job over to the experts here at Aussie Home Energy where we will check your:

  • Meter type
  • Electricity tariff type
  • Analyse your electricity bills
  • Supply a list of cheaper electricity offers

See our ELECTRICITY METER & BILLING ANALYSIS for further information.

Note : Mechanical meters [clock face / spinning wheel do not support the TOU electricity tariff.

How To Maximise Your Home Generated Solar Power

Australia leads the world with the number of homes having solar power installed.

In fact well over 15% of homes have installed solar power. Yet a very small amount of those homes, have any form of energy monitoring installed.

Meaning there are many homes with unknown financial losses and many whom are not aware, their solar power system has issues!

Installing energy monitoring allows you to be become one of the lucky householders, whom will easily know :

  • Instantly of any solar power hardware issue
  • How to maximise the use of generated power against imported power
  • Reduce exported power when there is little financial return
  • Reduce your overall power costs, by increasing efficiency of energy use and appliances

This is a great solution when compared to the average Aussie home. Where householders are only aware of issues when the electricity bill arrives. Every 3 months and that's if they check the bill! Now that could be a large financial loss!

Now in your home when you install energy monitoring you are easily going to see data that up to now has been missing. Energy data for :

Generation : Consumption : Import : Export

We believe there are 5 EASY STEPS to reducing your power costs with solar power installed.

  1. Maximise the best use of your generated solar power
  2. Minimise your imported power during the sunny hours of the day
  3. Depending on your metering, reduce exported power [when paid little for your excess power]
  4. Increase efficiency of any power used and appliances
  5. Secure the best electricity deal you can

By adding more hardware to your Realtime Solar Power Monitoring System you could also be :

  • Monitoring your 10A socket based appliances such as entertainment, freezer, tenant etc
  • Monitoring more power box based circuits such as air conditioner, pool, workshop etc

With your Aussie Home Energy Monitoring System collecting data, in real-time you will soon know :

  • What energy your appliances are using and the costs
  • When appliances are left on by error
  • The 24/7 standby power of your appliances

IMPORTANTLY by installing a tablet for your Solar Power Monitoring System in an easy to see location, you will allow everyone in the home to act on the real-time data. When everyone becomes aware of electricity usage and costs quickly, you see savings quicker!

Dummies Guide To Solar And Consumption Power Monitoring

Now if you want to get the best out of your Net FIT solar power system, firstly you need to monitor what is going on with your consumption, generation, import and export power.

Secondly you really NEED all current clamps to be placed in the correct position. And it is this correct position, that is catching out a few to many electricians. Especially when it comes to clamping the consumption power!

There is simply no excuse for any electrician to leave a clients home, without firstly making sure all clamps are correctly placed.

So we have again 'fine tuned' our documentation once more to hopefully reduce ALL errors! And reduce calls to our office from our clients, for an error by someone else!

We have had to create this document simply to reduce client frustration. Client frustration due to their power monitoring systems being installed incorrectly. Where the electrician has left the site and is not too interested in coming back! The client in many cases believing the electrician has done the right thing, when he has not!

The most common incorrect positioning of consumption clamps, is when the solar power feeds back through the same clamps. Resulting in the consumption being affect by the solar power generation. Easily spotted as when the sun is shining the consumption rises and falls in a similar manner.

Investigations on PVOutput prove there are many solar monitoring systems out there, where the consumption clamps are not correct. And this error is always due to the incorrect positioning of clamps, not the hardware itself.

Incorrect positioning of clamps results in data similar to that shown below where the consumption is following the sun! Now whilst one could be trying to use up as much generated power, we know this is not the case!

Incorrect Position With Solar Feeding Into Consumption

So if your consumption and solar power monitoring data looks like the above, then you need to address that with your electrician. The solar is feeding back through the consumption clamps.

What is should look like is this.

Correct Position Where Consumption DOES NOT FOLLOW Solar

Now there simply is no excuse for any electrician to think they know where to place the clamps, as our guide clearly explains the correct position. The document is hosted on our SUPPORT page.

Remember there is only ONE WAY to monitor solar generated power and total household consumption and that is the correct way! Otherwise the data means little and is of no use!

We hope many of you whom are about to install solar power and consumption monitoring, in a NET FIT environment come across the post and understand the correct procedure, or are able to inform the electrician.

Choose $85 Or $425 For Your Solar Generated Power

Why is it important to be in a position to easily see your imported and exported power?

Well nobody wants to export their Solar PV investment!

Without feedback as to what is happening with your solar generated power, you will simply know very little.

Currently in NSW net metering means, exported power is worth little. For example 4 to 6 cents per kWh! And after recent rises in July 2016 you could be paying 30 cents or more, for your imported power.

At only 6 cents per kWh exported, each kWh of your solar power, exported over the year is only going to give you a small financial return of $85!

Now with some feedback and a little action under the roof, you could see that that same 1 kWh of power, suddenly be worth $425 when used to offset imported power costs [based on 30 cents per kWh]!

So can you now see why you need INSTANT ENERGY MONITORING feedback?

We hope so, as you really do need to know what your:

  • Consuming
  • Generating
  • Importing
  • Exporting

Learn how to remove the guesswork today and start making educated decisions on your solar power investment.

Getting Ready For The End Of The NSW Solar Bonus Scheme

No doubt you are aware the NSW Solar Bonus Scheme ends on the 31st December 2016.

All NSW households receiving 60 / 20 cents for all power [Gross FIT] sent back to the grid, will need to act. You will have received notification of this fact via letter earlier in the year, from the Government.

Back in April we wrote a post explaining it would be in your favour, to look into any required meter / tariff changes, before the rush.

We have just checked out the Department Of Industry Resources & Energy's website and found this very helpful page HERE. Detailing everything about what you need to know and do. Importantly as we said preferably before the event.

Remember as is common with Government Schemes bottlenecks can occur. It will pay you to be aware of your options. There could be shortages of meters or installers.

Once you have you new electronic meter installed, we would further advise you to call us, so we can help you keep your eye on your import / export power. As the power on your roof will now be worth little to send back to the grid.

Aussie Electricity Prices Now Above 50 Cents Per kWh

OUCH! Being on a Time Of Use tariff could be costly, if you are not managing the electricity tariff correctly.

After all was that not one of the main reasons the electricity retailers sold you the idea of the TOU tariff in the first place, some years ago! So you could manage your tariff and hopefully reduce electricity costs for your family?

Prices on the 1st July 2016 have just gone past the 50 cents per kWh mark, for those times of day when you need the power to cook, heat / cool, or simply feed your family.

The question is this. Is the TOU tariff saving you or costing you more than a comparable flat or tiered rate tariff, when based on your home's usage pattern.

There are three easy ways you can find this out:

1. Get the calculator and the power bills out and do some simple maths
2. Install an electricity monitor with tariff comparison software
3. Send four of your electricity bills to us for analysis

Simple solutions for finding out the best tariff suited to your home's electricity usage patterns, are only a call away. Call now for help.....

Switching 10A Appliances On Off The Smart Way

If you are not aware of the ability to switch on off appliances within the home on auto pilot, here is an update.

For sometime now Smart 10A switched socket outlets have been available from many hardware stores in Australia.

A Smart 10A switched socket outlet is a device that plugs into any 10A socket in the home. You are then able to control the appliance plugged into this Smart device remotely, often via a mobile application or web browser.

This means you can do such things as:

  • Turn a heater on before arriving home
  • Control your pool pump
  • Turn on / off lights within the home
  • Use excess power from your Solar PV

In fact the uses for these Smart 10A socket switched outlets is endless. So let us throw in a few more possibilities. What if you could control [toggle on /off] your appliances based on such criteria as:

  • Time of day
  • Light / dark hours
  • Weather
  • By sending a SMS
  • By sending an email
  • Activate via motion in the room
  • Timer
  • kWh usage

Not forgetting, you can also log the power usage of the appliance in question.

The list of possibilities is growing as the wealth of knowledge on the internet connects together. It is this connecting of information that is allowing such simple devices to grow into far more, than they were initially designed for.

So why not think what you CANNOT control in the home but wish to and see if a Smart 10A Switched Outlet can help you to overcome that problem.

We would love to hear what you end up doing, with your Smart 10A Switched Outlet. One such device we are working with is the Belkin WeMo.

Why Not Send Solar Export To Appliances On AutoPilot?

When you are NET metered your solar power if not used by your appliances, is simply exported back to the grid. And in some cases for little financial return ie four to six cents!

Now whilst you can turn appliances on / off to use this power off the roof instead of exporting, in some cases it is simply to hard.

To hard due to you being at work or you do not have the time whilst at home for such a task. So what about if you could get this to happen on autopilot?

What we mean here is you direct the excess power ie exported power to a switched outlet in your home. Now this switched outlet could be connected to a long list of appliances such as:

  • Tumble dryer
  • Washing machine
  • Portable air conditioner
  • Electric heater
  • Heated towel rail
  • Storage heater
  • Air to air heat source pump
  • Small immersion heater
  • Electric slow cooker
  • Water pump
  • Charging electronics / 12 volt car batteries
  • Charging a golf buggy
  • Charging an electric car
  • Hot tub
  • Pool pump cleaner
  • Pool heater

Each 10A switched outlet is limited to a maximum power rating of 2400W. Meaning that is 2.4kW of export being used smartly. Importantly maximising your solar power investment's financial return.

Now if your exporting 10kW a day, that is only 60 cents return @ 6 cent per kW. Though powering your appliances via the 10A switched outlet, that same power has just saved you $2.20 off imported power costs [based on 22 cents per kWh]

As you can see that is a SMART POWER SAVING idea! Now if that was the case for only half of the year, it compares to:

  • An export return of $109
  • Or an import offset return of $400!

Now if your interested in such an idea, then why not visit our SMART SOLAR POWER Dashboard for all the information?

Diverting Your Excess Power

This blog post brought to you by Aussie Home Energy a major player in the HOME ELECTRICITY SAVING SERVICE industry in Australia.

Are You Being Screwed By Your Electricity Retailer?

This is an interesting question which unfortunately Aussie householders cannot answer. Simply due to them not having a clue about their current electricity billing, due to not spending anytime looking at their electricity bills!

It seems 'Paid and filed' is the norm and then to await the next electricity bill.

Great for us, as it keeps us busy with our ELECTRICITY METER & BILLING ANALYSIS SERVICE

Though the question still arises. We would have to say for you to know if your not being screwed, you would have to know:

  • If you are on a tariff suited to your usage patterns, ie Time Of Use V Flat rate or tiered rate
  • If your tariff cost is the best you can get, with or without any discounts

Now what electricity retailers will not do is call you! To offer you a better deal. It is up to you to ask for a better deal or do some homework on other retailers offers.

Sometimes simply a phone call to the electricity retailer will result in a 20% discount or more off usage charges.

You importantly need to makesure the initial cost of the price per kWh is not being marked up first though, as this does occur! A little bit of Bad Faith we would have to say....

Now whilst some of you may think 20% is not a lot, it can be. A large home in Sydney recently analysed, could have:

SAVED $4800 Off electricity bills over six months

Simply if they had had a 20% discount applied! In fact there was no discount at all being offered and this is by one of the big four electricity retailers. Bad Faith again we would have to say, when this home was spending considerable funds on their electricity costs for their home.

So what do you need to do is homework! Or call us to analyse your electricity bills for you and get you a better deal.

Visit our ELECTRICITY METER & BILLING ANALYSIS SERVICE page for all the information.

Now whilst the electricity retailer is not obviously trying to screw you, they could be offering you better deals on autopilot a bit similar to what some of the mobile phone carriers do.

We know for sure the electricity retailer's Client Loyalty Officer is often away from his desk! But what about that Client Retention Office whom hounds the hell out of you, when you mention you are looking for a switch for a better deal. Funny that!

BEWARE : AGL Electricity Bill Scam

Looks like the online scammers are now trying it on, with the electricity billing system here in Australia!

You need to be aware if you are an AGL client, there is a scam going around asking for payment of fake electricity bills.

A few basics will show you the email is a scam, these being:

  • The sender of the email is not AGL
  • Hovering over any links with your mouse, will clearly show you a non AGL address. In our case a Russian based link

The best thing to do in all cases if you are not sure, is simply DELETE the email.

AGL are aware of the SPOOF and advise you HERE dated 1st June 2016 on what to do.

See the report via The Herald Sun HERE with a clear example of what the email looks like.
