Tsunami Of Rubbish Electricity Bills In Australia

Pig Fly High Over Electricity Retailers In Australia
Power Station Pigs Flying High
Surely not as this is a multi-million dollar industry! Where large electricity retailer's computer systems pump out bills left right and centre, checked periodically by a human for error?

So how come we are seeing an increasing tsunami of rubbish electricity bills here in Australia?

It is getting to the point where 'pigs are flying' high over the offices of some electricity retailers.

It is hard to believe electricity bills sent out to customers are simply to hard for anyone to understand. The electricity retailer not being able to supply answers either, surely makes possible the sight of pink pigskin in the sky, even more feasible!

If electricity bills in Australia are indeed checked, then how can the average householder make sense of this 24 LINE electricity bill for instance?

Example Of Rubbish Electricity Bill Australia

As the electricity bill stands it is just a rubbish electricity bill no-one can understand, so why send it out to the householder unchecked?

It is not the time Australian regulators enforce commonsense at least where all electricity bills are SIMPLY & EASY to understand by all concerned?

$50K Bill? Aussie Electricity Bill Complaints Increase

Electricity Bill Errors On The Rise
When you hear of a householder in Australia receiving a $50,000 electricity bill, the first thing that often comes to mind, is electricity retailer incompetence!

It sure does make you wonder how good the regulations are for electricity billing in Australia. And moreso what system is in place, to make these regulations stick!

Surely a random selection of generated electricity bills are checked for error by humans, within these over sized electricity retailers? Or are the electricity bills computed and just sent out with no sample error checking? The latter could be more wide spread than thought. Based on a recent discussion with an electricity retailer's customer service centre. Where we were told no-one checked the computer generated bills. That task was up to the receiver of the bill! And we know most Aussie householder's do not check the electricity bill 100%.

An error we found during an electricity bill analysis, which we would say was systemic, is on this blog post WHY IT PAYS TO CHECK FOR ELECTRICITY BILL ERRORS.

With the constant rise in complaints across Australian States and our ELECTRICITY AUDITING SERVICE finding more and more errors in electricity billing and metering, something needs to be done fast. To reduce this lack of electricity bill good faith, that is almost now becoming the norm.

Ombudsman's for electricity in most States, are now reporting huge increases in complaints. And it appears commonly these complaints are focused on the three main electricity retailers, Origin Energy, Energy Australia and AGL Sales.

If you have ever tried calling the Customer Service Centre of any large electricity retailer, you will no doubt have come away with nothing more than a sense of disbelief, assuming you could get someone on the other end of the line whom understood your problem in the first case.

We know there are electricity bill errors and if you are reading this, then there is a good chance you have questions about your electricity bill too.

Today Tonight summaries some of the confusion very well, with a VIDEO on the the woman whom received electricity bills in error up to $50,000!

If you have had electricity bill errors, why not leave your story here to inform others.

Why It Pays To Check For Electricity Bill Errors

Let's face it, we live in an automated society where electricity billing is left to the programmers and computer systems. The electricity bill nowadays for many householders, is often paid in a rush. This results in a lack of time for analysis. With further pressure being applied by the electricity retailers, to 'pay on time'. This 'paying on time' carrot, results in a nice hefty discount for many homes!

At Aussie Home Energy we have a different outlook regarding the attractive 'pay on time' discounts.

NOT Paying On Time Gets You A Fine!

And a fine of 17% for late payment can seriously hurt the bottom line!

With the pressure of 'paying on time', the busy household does not take the time to check the electricity bill. Once paid the electricity bill is filed away in many homes.

We often say not checking the electricity bill means you are going to remain solely a bill payer. None the wiser to your electricity usage, or electricity billing.

So why not start taking the time to check your electricity bill?

Let's say you take a full 15 MINUTES out of your hectic lifestyle once every three months, to check your electricity bill. What could you discover? Are there really errors within Australian electricity bills?

The sample electricity bill shown here may answer that question. Whilst we are not going to mention whom the electricity retailer is whom supplied this bill, it does back up our statement that you need to check your electricity bill for accuracy.

Electricity Bill Errors
Checking The Electricity Bill Can Save You

Remember in most cases your electricity bill is generated by a computer system, with ONLY YOU to check the accuracy of the bill! If you think your electricity bill is checked for accuracy by a human, think again!

Take a look at the sample electricity bill and see if you can spot the errors. In this case the errors are almost double any 17% discount!

The total cost with errors for the electricity usage in our sample is $923.66. What is the correct total?

If you wish to add the maths with your comments, then please do.

Aussie Home Electricity Bill Errors

Is It Possible For Your Home Electricity Bill To Be At Error?

Like any other bill, the home electricity bill can also suffer from errors. Therefore it always pays, to have at least an understanding of how the electricity bill is compiled.

Not performing the electricity bill check, before paying, could mean you are going to be out of pocket!

Here are two errors in home electricity billing, that we have discovered in the last six months. Both of these errors became apparent, when the bill was inspected for accuracy, at the conclusion on a HOME ELECTRICITY AUDIT, or home energy assessment.

For one householder the error was advantageous, as there was a considerable credit due, from the electricity provider.

The two errors are as follows:

  • No Off-Peak Electricity Recorded - This home uses electric hot water. The error occurred when the client transferred over from one provider to another. Out of the two providers, one did not transfer the hot water usage to an off-peak tariff. Thus the client was awarded a large credit due to the over charging of the hot water usage, having being charged at the on-peak rate

  • No On-Peak Electricity Recorded - A couple of elderly clients, who have only ever paid for off-peak hot water and a service charge. Being in their home for just over 18 months, they were not aware of the electricity bills makeup. There was simply, no on-peak usage recorded on the bill. Nor noted by the electricity provider via the meter reader. A new meter had been installed prior to purchase of the home

Both of the above errors occurred over a period of one and a half years, with meters being read on a quarterly basis. What the above shows is this:

  • Home electricity bill errors do occur
  • It pays to understand your electricity bill

Recently we are becoming more aware of more Aussie homes with errors with smart meters. If you are a householder with errors due to smart meter, please leave your comments on this blog post. For more examples see our ELECTRICITY BILL ERRORS page.
